Our Moving CheckLists
We’ve moved hundreds of families and businesses across the Kawarthas. We’re sharing our internal playbooks and checklists to help you prepare for a perfect transition.
Home Moving Checklist
Moving is more than just logistics—it’s a life transition. Our expert team is here to make your home transition as smooth as possible.
A Month Before The Move
- The Great Purge: Go through every room (including the garage and attic). Donate or sell items you no longer need. Remember: Fewer items mean a faster, lower-cost move.
- Document Hub: Start a physical or digital folder for all moving-related paperwork, including your SpeedyPack estimate.
- School & Medical Records: Request copies of school transcripts and medical/dental records for all family members.
- Change of Address: Notify the post office, your bank, and your employer of your upcoming move.
2 Weeks Before The Move
- Utility Coordination: Schedule your utilities (Hydro, Gas, Water, Internet) to be disconnected at your old home, and connected at the new home the day before you arrive.
-
Supplies Check: If you are packing yourself, ensure you have professional-grade boxes and tape. Contact us if you want a SpeedyPack supplies to be delivered right to your door, at no cost.
-
The “First Night” Box: Pack a suitcase or clear bin with essentials: toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers, basic tools, and any medications.
A Week Before The Move
- Appliance Prep: Defrost your freezer and ensure appliances like washers and dryers are disconnected and drained.
-
Floor Plan: Decide exactly where large furniture pieces will go in the new house. This allows our team to place them perfectly the first time.
-
Valuables: Set aside jewelry, small heirlooms, and important legal documents. We recommend transporting these personally in your own vehicle.
The Day Before The Move (Tomorrow!!)
- Clear the Path: Ensure walkways, driveways, and stairs are clear of debris (or snow/ice)
-
Pack-Ready Check: Ensure all boxes are taped shut and labeled with the destination room.
-
Electronics: Take photos of the back of your TV and computer setups so you know where the wires go, then pack them securely.
-
Confirm Details: Double-check your arrival time window in your SpeedyPack Movers quote document.
The Moving Day
When the SpeedyPack truck arrives, our mission begins. Our crew is trained to handle the heavy lifting while you focus on your family. Follow these three golden rules to help us ensure a safe, efficient, and damage-free transition to your new front door.
-
Be Present: Ensure someone is available to answer questions for our movers or the crew.
-
Final Walkthrough: Before the truck pulls away, check every closet and cupboard one last time.
-
Safety First: Keep children and pets in a safe, quiet area away from the heavy lifting zones.

F.A.Q.
How can I save money on my move?
Since we charge by the hour, Time = Money. The faster we can safely load and unload, the lower your final bill will be.
Ensure all boxes are ready to be loaded. If possible, taking apart bed frames and removing mirrors from dressers ahead of time saves our crew significant billable minutes.
Why does the price fluctuate within the same mover?
Some factors that can influence the work time are building accessibility, stairs, customer readiness. The more we know about the details, the more accurate the quote will be.
How do I choose the right mover for my needs?
Don’t just look for the lowest hourly rate; look for value. A cheap 2-man crew that takes 10 hours is more expensive than a professional 3-man crew that finishes in 5. Verify Insurance, check Local Reputation and Ask About Equipment.
Are my items insured while they are in the truck?
Yes. As a professional, we don’t just carry boxes; we carry your life’s investments.
SpeedyPack Movers is fully insured with Cargo Insurance and General Liability. This means your belongings are covered from the moment we wrap them in your home to the moment they are placed in your new residence.
Do I need to empty my dresser drawers before the move?
For the safety of your furniture’s joints and the health of our movers, we generally recommend emptying drawers of heavy items (books, linens, or tools).
Pro-Tip: Removing items helps us move the piece faster, which ultimately saves you money on our hourly rate.
What do you do to protect my belongings and my home?
We treat your home like a sanctuary. Our “White-Glove” protocol includes:
Property Protection (floor runners , banister padding and door-jamb protectors)
Furniture Wrapping (clean moving blankets and secured with shrink-wrap or tape before it leaves the room)
Specialized Gear (upright dollies, 4-wheel carts, and specialized straps to ensure heavy items are moved with zero impact on your floors).
What happens if the move takes longer than the initial estimate?
Our initial estimates are based on the inventory and conditions you provide. However, factors like elevator delays, extreme weather, or “last-minute packing” can extend the time. If we see the move is taking longer than expected, our lead mover will communicate with you immediately. You only pay for the actual time worked, ensuring you never pay for a “buffer” you didn’t use.
What if I change my mind and cancel the move?
We understand that real estate closings and life events can be unpredictable.
Our Policy: We ask for at least 48 hours’ notice for cancellations. This allows us to re-route our crews to other families in need. Please contact us as soon as your plans change so we can discuss rescheduling or deposit refunds based on your specific booking agreement.
